Netflix, A24, Sony, and Paramount Are All Chasing Letterboxd. Only One of Them Should Buy It.

The platform has 30 million members, a community that cannot be manufactured, and one fatal vulnerability: the wrong buyer kills what makes it worth buying.

Letterboxd has 30 million members as of June 2026, having added 10 million in the past year. LionTree is managing the sale at a reported $250 million valuation — five times what Tiny paid in 2023. Netflix, Sony, Paramount, A24, RedBird, TPG, and Alexis Ohanian are all in early conversations. Each wants Letterboxd for a different reason. Most would ruin it.

Netflix wants the discovery data. The problem: the moment users understand their reviews feed an engine owned by the company whose films they are reviewing, the trust evaporates. The acquisition destroys the asset it is designed to acquire. Sony wants distribution intelligence. The community would feel this influence eventually and Letterboxd would lose the independence that makes its recommendations trustworthy. Paramount is the most cynical buyer — in the middle of an antitrust case that depends partly on arguing A24 provides meaningful competition, acquiring the platform where A24 films receive their strongest organic advocacy is both strategically backward and regulatorily exposed. RedBird and TPG will monetize the community in ways that are rational from a returns perspective and corrosive to the culture that generated the audience. A24 is the right buyer. Its films consistently overperform on Letterboxd because Letterboxd's users are exactly the audience A24 has always been making films for. The studio understands community as a distribution strategy in a way no major studio and no private equity firm does. Alexis Ohanian understands community governance but the strategic infrastructure question remains open. Letterboxd is worth $250 million because it cannot be manufactured. The only buyer who understands that well enough not to manufacture it into irrelevance is A24.
